Last June 28, 2008, The Featineans Association of Toronto (TFAT) hosted a summer night party Hawaiian style at the Garnett Williams Community Centre in Thornhill. Approximately 150 guests including members and officers showed up in their respective colorful Hawaiian attire. A full range of spectrum representing age, people and dance skills comprised the association’s enthusiastic guests poured out the hall enjoying the music played by the very popular Florence Sound System. Lauper Catering Service owned and operated by Florie (director) and Michelle Silang satisfied the selective taste and appetite of every guest.

As in any Filipino gathering, music is a crucial ingredient of the program and for everyone’s pleasure. Two famous Elvis impersonator’s Nanding and TFAT’s very own Tom Flores (director) rendered a dynamic “Rock and Roll” as well as sentimental love songs. Also, Andy Gabriel – the owner of “Angel’s Kiss Restaurant” – mesmerized the audience by singing Engelbert Humperdink’s unforgettable and timeless songs. Young and pretty Iris (niece of Joy San Juan) charmed all with the intensity of her heart pounding Hawaiian dance movements vibrating in all four corners of the hall. This indeed, made the event completely a Hawaiian tradition.

Oliver Rey, TFAT President, welcomed the guests and delivered a brief discourse. In his message, he asked for the support of Juana Tejada’s case – a hardworking very diligent Filipina caregiver diagnosed with cancer wanting to stay in Canada but is being asked to leave this country by CID. Tony San Juan (PRO), the man with a golden voice, emceed the evening. Behind the scenes contributing to the success of the affair are the untiring support of Annie and Julio Buiza (founders), Max and Nenita Recaido (VP and Treasurer respectively), Res Paje (Secretary), Cesar Banda (Director), Violy Vilan (director), Caloy and Carmen (director) Jayme, Luz Sider (director), Darlene Rey, and super touring couple Rory and Bert Pabustan.

Organized in July, 1989, The Featineans Association of Toronto, with its defined initiatives like its ongoing scholarship project, academic excellence recognition awards , outreach financial assistance gestures, inter- association cooperation liaison, event fundraisers and other worthy community-based activities, has become a significant player and participant to the socio- professional life among the Filipino Canadian community.
