Friends of KCCC, families, revellers all, gathered at the grand hall of the Kalayaan Cultural Community Centre on New Year’s Eve, December 31, 2008 to await the coming of the year 2009. All dressed in their finest and wearing masks of all sorts- some stylish, some funny and some symbolic, the crowd danced the night away until countdown, the highlight of the evening.

A few minutes before countdown, everybody converged to the middle of the dance floor under a bagful of one hundred multi-colored balloons, a glassful of champagne in one hand, the other holding on to their neighbour’s hand and counted down the seconds together. At the last count, the KCCC president, Mama Ching Quejas, pulled the string that released the balloons from the bag that went cascading down to the crowd below that rowdily greeted each other, “Happy New Year” with a toast of champagne and kissing here and kissing all over by everyone.

The Auld Lang Syne, the Beer Barrel Polka around the dance floor and the bird dance and other group dances followed. More dancing and eating went on far beyond midnight.

Leading the guests were: Her Worship, Mila Eustaquio Syme, Justice of the Peace and her hubby Robert Syme; Fely Castelo, U.E. Alumni Group’s immediate past president and Bobby Gonzalez; Optician of the year, Dr. Belle Tumbokon and her sister Lilette and their guests; the Filipino Seniors of Mississauga: Benny Cadang who gave a beautiful invocation and acting president Ningning Liwag, Rudy and Vangie Alcasid, Brent and Rose Gibson, “Mother” Dioning Sebastian, Charito Lopez, Mary Dabon, Pete and Lucy Mendoza and others; Minnie Bandayrel and Mindy Locquiao, Rene and Ginny Sevilla; Junie and Luz Paculaba and company; Willie and Polly Enumerable who travelled all the way from Whitby to be with the group and their friends; David and Evelyn Pond; the ever-loyal Bayanihan group of Mississauga led by KCCC director Archie Ayala and his charming wife Zeny, Ben and Lumi Montada, Ben and Linda Javier, Nora Nunez and her sister Evelyn Imperial and others; Ben and Rose Tom and company; the very energetic KCCC Executive Vice-President, Luis “Chito” Carbonell and his wife Merla, Engineer Cesar Cruz and his wife Becky; KCCC VP for Programs, Ed Frondozo and his wife, Andrea; Manny and Juliet Mendoza; Architect Leo Blaquera and his two teen-age kids, son Giulio and daughter Stephanie; Alex Sales and wife, The Quejas-Salazar-Purificacion family and others.

The New Year’s Eve Ball has been a regular event of KCCC through the years, in collaboration with the Filipino Seniors of Mississauga and has become a tradition to allow friends and family a once-a-year occasion to be together and greet the New Year together.

Plans for next year include having an entertainer/performer to add more fun and color to the occasion. A committee is in charge of this aspect and is, even this early, looking for a really good one.
