Book with TICO Travel agents to protect your money
As you prepare to book summer travel, the Travel Industry Council of Ontario advises you to book with Ontario travel agencies registered with the Travel Industry Council of Ontario to guarantee that your travel dollars are protected and you can get help from a professional should anything go wrong.
“You can search the net and book online and still be protected by the Ontario Travel Compensation Fund, which reimburses you if your travel company goes bankrupt, as long as you have booked with an agent registered with the Travel Industry Council of Ontario,” said TICO President & CEO Michael Pepper.
There are 2,500 travel agencies in Ontario registered with the Travel Industry Council of Ontario. When you book with these firms, Ontario’s Travel Compensation Fund protects you and you will get your money back if the travel company goes bankrupt.
If you paid cash, make sure you get a receipt, as you will need this as proof of your investment.
Travel agencies who belong to TICO must provide a receipt for all payment transactions. Keep a paper copy of all your transactions, correspondence and confirmations, including the description of your hotel and the services included.
Check TICO’s website at www.tico.ca for more travel tips. You can also see their fun and creative new ads that began airing on stations in Ontario April 22, including Global, CBC, CTV and OMNI.
Here are a few tips from TICO to help travelers avoid hassles:
1. Buy travel insurance. Ontario travel agencies are also required to advise you of the availability of trip cancellation insurance and out-of-province health insurance at the time of the booking.
2. Know the terms and conditions of your booking. Before you confirm your booking, your travel agent must disclose the terms and conditions to you. Pay attention to details on cancellation, changes to bookings and refunds.
3. Make copies. In case of loss or theft, make copies of your passport details, visa, insurance policy, airline tickets and credit card numbers. Carry one copy in a different place than the originals while travelling and leave a copy with someone at home.
4. Check dates, times and flight numbers the day before your flight leaves.
