KAPISANAN’s KULTURA 2013: Pinoy youth blend, innovate, celebrate arts, culture, food

A new wave of Filipino generation is hitting the streets – and making a mark on the socio-cultural landscape of Filipino culture, arts, and history. It comes from a place – not of rebellion or shame, rather molded and inspired by traditional values and old ways married with innovative ideas – that brings to surface the creative entrepreneurial spirit of the modern Filipino. Though themes of migration, resettlement and immersion are not foreign concepts, the challenge of integrating and accepting the identity of what it means to be a Filipino-Canadian is still a strong theme that’s disassembled, introspected, and most of all celebrated.
The 8th Annual KULTURA Filipino Arts Festival is the venue for artistic dialogues, cultural exchanges and exploration that ran from August 7 to 11 in Toronto, showcasing original songs, folk arts and dance; art exhibits and installations; and drama and poetry.
As the KULTURA organizer and executive director of Kapisanan Philippine Centre for Arts and Culture, Caroline Mangosing shared her thoughts on this year’s overarching theme, “We all have such different migration experiences in terms of dislocation, and younger people now don’t have the same experiences that we had in our days (They have different type of challenges) and I think what we want to create at Kapisanan and KULTURA is to find a common ground, to have all these experiences expressed and talked about,” she said.
The widely popular Philippine Culinary Competition capped the week-long festival, with this year’s theme Kain Kalye: Filipino Street Eats held at Artscape Wychwood Barns. Only in its second round, the food competition is still something new, “We’ve only started the food last year and we created that competition with the theme of adobo and this year it’s Street food. It’s something that is very new for us but it’s something that we should have included a long time ago,” Mangosing explained.
