Updates on GTA Fundraising and Relief Efforts

As the holiday season rolls in, the Filipino diaspora scrambled to give aid to their typhoon-ravaged country, tying many of Christmas events and activities with Typhoon Haiyan relief efforts across the GTA. The Philippine Reporter has covered big fundraising campaigns like the Canada for Philippines Benefit Concert on November 24 and #ProjectLiftPH, a collaborative effort by Kapisanan and Carlos Bulosan Theatre, on December 4. Still, there are many other community-based events that are providing relief efforts as the Canadian government extends the deadline for matching donations from Dec. 9 to Dec. 23. In case you’re wondering how much money was raised so far, and any other updates from these organizations, we’ve asked them for you:
Help Philippines (Yolanda) Haiyan Fundraiser

What is it? The fundraiser was held in Gateway Centre for New Canadians in Mississauga; Prestige Restaurant in North York; and LPJ Family Life Centre in Scarborough. Pastor Julius Tiangson of Gateway Centre reported:
Funds raised? $22,062 so far…Other groups who joined with several fundraising initiatives this past week:

c) Mississauga Mandarin Association

Wind & Water: Artist Fundraiser for Haiyan Relief

What is it? Spent Pencils, The Goud Stuff, BeatboxCan & Kanopy Productions organized the Wind & Water, an Artist Fundraiser for Haiyan Relief. Some of Toronto’s best Filipino Artists, Beatboxer’s and DJ’s got together for an Artist Fundraiser for Haiyan Typhoon relief in the Philippines. Some talents included: Mike Del Mundo, Francis Manapul, Vince Sunico, Paul Limgenco, Marvin Mariano, Aaron Ong, Gerard De La Costa, Arnold Trinidad, Pearce Cacalda, Marvin Sianipar, Oliver Castaneda, and Kevin Briones. Funds raised? Including the government match, the donations exceeded the $3500 fundraising goal.
Lovelight: a wellness workshop for Typhoon Haiyan Relief

What is it? Kaye Penaflor, Pearce Cacalda and Jaisa Sulit, produced a wellness event for Haiyan relief. Pearce is a Reiki Master & Intuitive Healer, Jaisa is a Mindfulness Teacher & Occupational Therapist and Kaye Penaflor is a Yoga Instructor & Spiritual Ninja.
Funds raised? Over $2000 including the government match!
**Proceeds from “Lovelight: a wellness workshop for Typhoon Haiyan Relief” and “Wind & Water: Artist Fundraiser for Haiyan Relief” are going to the Typhoon Haiyan Fund at the Canadian Red Cross.
Hinga: Breathe for Philippines Relief at the Energyxchange

What is it? Carmen Puyo & Dr. Blessyl Buan held Hinga, a Pilates and Yoga for Philippines Relief. “Hinga” means “to breathe” in Tagalog, appealing to like-minded movement studios and instructors to contribute to the cause. Affiliate studios: My energyXchange, Ilovekickboxing.com, Moksha Yoga Thornhill, Moksha Yoga North York, Neurocore Physiotherapy and Pilates inc., and Combative Concepts.
Funds raised? They raised over $4,000. City Dance corps will continue to raise funds for Hinga with their Stilleto Hip Hop class.

What is it? When a Monday night feels like Friday night, it just means that the Playa Cabana-hosted fundraiser event was a success. 100% of the revenues generated from that evening was donated to Typhoon Haiyan cause.
Funds raised? $10,000
