PHILIPPINE SCHOOL IN DUBAI
By Analise (Amiira) Ticzon
DUBAI–On December 6, the Philippines School Chess Club – Dubai together with the Expat Chess Club held a junior chess tournament to raise fund for the victims of Typhoon Haiyan.
A total of 44 brilliant players between the ages of 6 and 16 years-old came out to “Push a Pawn for a Cause” held at the Philippine School in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
For centuries, the game of chess has been seen as a remarkable tool to enhance minds, including those of children, by developing analytical and decision-making skills that can be used in real life situations. It is a means of patience, mental strength and endurance, as well as a way to acquire poised characteristics and good sportsmanship. In this case, the players had an added bonus of not just playing a game they love but doing their part in aiding those affected by one of the worst catastrophes that has ever hit the Philippines. All proceeds of the tournament are being utilized for sea-freight of goods donated by TPS students and other schools and organizations in the U.A.E.
“I want to congratulate Naeema for topping the age bracket category. It’s really fun watching Naeema play chess. I admire her fighting spirit. I witnessed some of her games where she is behind in material but she never gives up. She keeps on playing until her opponent blunders and she wins the game,” said Chess Coach Dennis San Juan
