Historic unveiling of smiling Rizal monument in Markham

On Sunday June 9, 2019. the Filipino community gathered at Luneta Gardens where the City of Markham unveiled the long-anticipated larger than life statue of Dr. Jose P. Rizal in celebration of the 121st anniversary of Philippine Independence and the first Philippine Heritage Month to be celebrated nationwide in Canada. This unique 6 ft bronze statue created by local Filipino artist Ignacio “Mogi” Mogado is the only known smiling Rizal statue in existence.
