Kilusang Mayo Uno hits NCRPO Chief Debold Sinas for being ‘pasaway,’ as he celebrated his birthday in Camp Bagong Diwa with a party.

As seen in photos posted on social media, the birthday party was attended by police officers and friends of Sinas, while no physical distancing was observed.

“Siya ang totoong pasaway, dahil sinadya’t pinagplanuhan niya ang salu-salo (gathering) para sa kanyang kaarawan, sa kabila ng pagbabawal nito sa panahon ng ECQ,” Jerome Adonis, KMU Secretary-General, said.

KMU noted that a party is a athering, and Sinas’ birthday party was attended by different police officers and friends that came from various places in violation of ECQ rules.

PNP Chief Gamboa quickly defended Sinas, saying the latter did not commit any ECQ violation.

“Sinas deliberately violated ECQ rules, they did not observe social distancing, clear and simple,” said Adonis.

The labor group lamented that while high ranking police officers like Sinas could freely hold parties, the police arbitrarily arrests and detains ordinary people who allegedly violate home quarantines.

KMU cited the arrests of vegetable and fish vendors, of Sitio San Roque residents, and of relief volunteers last May 1, as examples of “unreasonable and unjust” actions of the PNP.

“The police apprehends and even arrests ordinary people who go out of their houses simply because they need some air given the summer heat, or they need to find food or earn a living because aid is not coming to their households. Kapag maliliit na tao, may kasalanan kaagad, pero kapag tulad Sinas absuwelto,” said Adonis.

According to PNP date, 156,000 were apprehended for ECQ violations, of which 26% or 41,000 were actually arrested.

KMU called for a stop to the ‘pasaway’ labelling of those deemed as violators of ECQ rules.

“Tigilan na ang pagbansag na pasaway sa aming mahihirap. Hindi tayong ordinaryong tao ang dapat pagbuntunan ng sisi sa pagkalat ng virus. Duterte, Sinas and the like are the ones to blame for the continuous spread of COVID because they utterly failed to provide a medical solution to the health crisis,” said Adonis.

KMU reiterated that all community quarantines to be effective should be inegrated with mass testing and isolation and treatment of those infected with COVID-19.
