GTA’s Fil-Can educators offer free professional service
Newcomer immigrant families and even long- established families commonly experience some forms of settlement or adjustment and integration difficulties and other challenges within their respective homes, in the ethnic community and the mainstream environments, as well. These real issues are varied and continually challenging that may require a “helping hand” from those who have the skills and expertise to assist voluntarily and to advise productively.
Among the usual concerns involved are: societal- based parenting skills; student-school adjustment; academic tutoring, English communication; cultural understanding & adaptation; Filipino heritage language;education system knowledge; professional / trade / career practice certification & upgrading; job search resume writing/ interview preparation; career bridging & restarting and a host of other integration concerns. These are the types of “assistance services” which are being offered free by the Philippine Teachers Association – Canada (PTAC).
The four-year old socio – professional group, as a way of contributing its professional members’ experience and qualifications to those who are in need to enhance their life -is proud and happy to freely provide , on special arrangements possible, relevant assistance and advice to targeted members of the community. Through its Professional Outreach Project ( POP), PTAC is offering this community participatory program for those who need it.
With its current membership of 105 education professionals in Ontario PTAC has in its fold 42 women and men or 40% of which are registered and certified teachers by the Ontario College of Teachers. Out of the 42 OCTs , sixteen or 38% are presently teaching in the various GTA school boards, while twenty-six or 62 % are either teaching in private schools or in transition.
The Samahan ng mga Guro, is composed of twelve elementary school teachers( primary and junior divisions) and 30 high school ( intermediate and senior divisions) specialist teachers.
The high school teachers are OCT-accredited specialists in Chemistry,Computers, Drama, English,Guidance, History, Mathematics, Physical Education, Physics, Religion, Science,Technology, and Visual Arts courses. Also, the Group has 7 members with Doctorates in Education, Educational Administration, Guidance & Counselling, Physics, and Technology. Seventeen(17) members are holders of Masteral degrees in education, educational management, chemistry, English, guidance, mathematics, and science.
Headed by its current president, Tony A. San Juan (OCT), the PTAC Executive Directorate is composed of: Rose Cruz , Boni Curutan( OCT), Bernadette Gapuz, Maria Sonia Pascual, Pet Collantes, Rosette Santiago, Mila Curutan, Rose Apilado (OCT), Sam Posadas(OCT), Jocelyn Bernardo, Noemi Andaya, Alma Mabazza, Joan Ang(OCT), Arthur Apilado, Lily Gacutan, Venus Geraneo., Ramon Morales(OCT),Gigi Nicholas, Amparo Rosario, and Mercy Santos.The board of advisers are: Rose Bustamante, Leone Manzanares, Marlene Mogado, and Emiliano Silverio.
