Over 100 golfers vie at UPAA event
Lionhead Golf and Country Club in Brampton, Ontario, is not used to Filipinos dominating the golf course. But rain or shine, there will be more than 100 of them who are going to navigate the fairway and green at the Tee UP High charity golf tournament on Sunday, May 30.
Scotiabank is the premium hole sponsor, while Richmond Hill Toyota is the sponsor for the hole-in-one prize, which is a new 2010 Toyota Corolla. Other donors are providing valuable prizes to the players, including those who can’t find the hole.
The University of the Philippines Alumni Association (UPAA) of Toronto is holding the fundraising event for its endowment fund to help needy but deserving students and to establish professorial chairs that would help retain valuable teaching staff at UP.
UPAA President Joe Zagala aims to raise more than $20,000 or _1-million from this and next year’s golf tournament that will be held also in May. Marilou Parcero is chairing the event with the wholehearted support of UPAA and non-UPAA volunteers.
The tournament will be using the scramble or best shot rule in which each player on a team tees off on each hole, and the players decide which shot was best and shoot from within a club length where the best shot has come to rest.
