Holds presscon re Sgro snub
TORONTO–The Community Alliance for Social Justice (CASJ) will officially launch as advocacy and social development group on Saturday, Janunary 22, 1-5 pm, at the Scarborough Civic Centre.
The launch will start with a press conference on CASJ’s position on the live-in caregiver program (LCP), access to trades and professions, and the recent exclusion of CASJ leaders in the ongoing LCP review process by Citizenship and Immigration Canada under Minister Judy Sgro.
The event will also include a brief report on CASJ’s work since its inception six months ago, specifically on the implementation of recommendations of the October 30 conference on policing and community safety, LCP, and access to trades and professions.
An action plan will be presented at the launch.
CASJ’s founding event will include the induction of its officers and members. Membership is open to all organizations and individuals who subscribe to the objectives and support the cause of social justice.
Foremost social justice and human rights advocates Zanana Akande, president of Urban Alliance on Race Relations; and Haroon Siddiqui, President of PEN Canada have been invited to grace the occasion as special guests, and to officiate in the induction ceremonies.
Light food will be served and networking and socials will follow.
CASJ at present is composed of 20 organizations and around 80 individuals, and is expected to increase its membership during the launching event.
Aside from advocacy, its mandate includes research and education, planning, community development and community organizing.
