Markham federation donates $1,000 to typhoon victims
MARKHAM–On Jan. 10, Markham Federation of Filipino Canadians’ Board representative Ramon Ombao made a special delivery to the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) office at the Batasan Complex in Quezon City, Philippines.
The delivery was a cash donation of CAD$1,000 (equivalent 46,000 pesos) for the typhoon and flood victims in the Quezon province. On hand to accept the cash donation was Secretary of the DSWD, Ms. Corazon (Dinky) Soliman.
In early December 2004, Markham Federation of Filipino Canadians responded to the call for relief assistance for the victims of the typhoon/flood disaster that ravaged parts of the Quezon province. Throughout the month of December, the MFFC has been collecting gifts-in-kind and cash donations from the citizens of Markham and surrounding communities.
Non-perishable food donation and other gifts-in-kind have been distributed through the Consulate General of the Philippines. The cash donation came from Alex Chiu Charities, the Markham Federation of Filipino Canadians, and proceeds from the auction sale of “Parols,” crafted by parents of the MFFC Youth Choir.
“We have a moral obligation to help people who have suffered from such a tragic event.”, states Yoly Ladines, Chair, MFFC Board of Directors, adding that, “Thanks to one of our Board of Directors, Ramon Ombao, we were able to channel the cash donation directly to the victims.”
Special delivery of the cash donation was made possible by Ramon and Tess Ombao, who were on a trip to the Philippines to visit families and friends. What better way than to physically hand-deliver the funds!
