A Chyrell and Rodney Christmas Card 2011

Chyrell Samson and Rodney Ronquillo will be putting on their 5th Christmas Concert this year, entitled “A Chyrell and Rodney Christmas Card.”

Similar to last year’s concert, Chyrell and Rodney set out to spread the word that Christmas is the season that celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ. The repertoire will also include a few traditional, original and modern Christmas pieces. However, the difference in this concert is that it will feature more singing performances and a few little skits in between. There will not be a first-set musical for this concert.

Chyrell and Rodney are known as a musical husband-and-wife duo, both in the Filipino community and the Toronto community as well. They both have released their own CDs and have had their own concerts throughout the years. Chyrell is a multi-award winner for many vocal competitions throughout the 90’s and 2000’s. Rodney is a singer, songwriter, composer, producer and also a songwriting award winner.

This year’s guest cast is similar to last year’s with one exception; the addition of DK Tijam, who is a star and a finalist in the Philippine reality show, “Star in a Million”. The show was a Philippine version of American Idol. DK is currently collaborating with Rodney for a couple of music projects.

Lia Luz will be returning for her third appearance in the Chyrell and Rodney Christmas concerts. Lia is a 15 year old soprano who has been studying voice for the last 6 years. Lia was also a member of the “Voices of the Future” Group performing at the Mabuhay Festival 2008. She has also performed at the 2010 and 2011 Filipinos Making Waves festivals.

Donald Torres makes his return for the second time in this concert series. He is a musical renaissance man who, like Rodney, also sings, plays piano, composes, produces, records, arranges and is a musical director as well. Donald got the opportunity to sing backing vocals for 80’s superstar singer, David Pomeranz, as well as a guest artist for Crystal Sahagun. His greatest achievement to date was producing a sold-out concert of 1000 people at Canadian Christian College.

Onofrio Virdo makes his return for the second time in this concert series as well. Chyrell and Rodney have worked with Onofrio throughout the years in both classical-jazz gigs, as well as Praise and Worship events. His journey in music started at the age of 13. A major influence of the style he plays comes from his passion for Classical and Jazz guitar.

Throughout the years, the Christmas Card concert series has been held at Toronto’s historic Heliconian Hall. With the current structural changes happening around the Yorkville area, it is possible that this could be the last Christmas concert that the couple will hold at venue.

Heliconian Hall is located in the heart of Yorkville, 35 Hazelton Ave (near Bay and Bloor Street). It will start at 8:00pm and Tickets will be $20.00.
