Sidlak – The Concert of Hope for Sendong victims
TORONTO–Some of the Filipino-Canadian community’s finest artists and well-known performers in Toronto will share the stage on January 21 in a concert billed as “Sidlak”. The title—which means a ray of sunlight– is taken from Cebuano, the predominant language spoken in Cagayan de Oro and Iligan, the cities hardest hit by the recent flooding precipitated by Typhoon Sendong last December 17th.
The concert aims to raise funds for “Operation Tabang (Help)”, the major fund drive for the victims of Typhoon Sendong organized by the Our Lady of the Assumption Church under the stewardship of Fr. Ben Ebcas, Pastor. The ad-hoc committee assisting Fr. Ebcas in this undertaking is composed of the following: Zeny Uy, Secretary, Archdiocesan Filipino Catholic Mission (AFCM); Nestor “Lolong” Marzan, President, Kagay-anon Int’l—Toronto; Minda Neri, PIDC President; and Ricky Caluen, representing “One For Iligan”. Other participating regional groups include organizations representing Bukidnon, Zamboanga, and Dumaguete-Tanjay (Negros), areas that have also been affected by the typhoon.
Popular soprano Ms. Lilac Cana top bills the concert. Also generously sharing their talents are well-known names in the local entertainment circuit like Michael Masangkay, Jennifer Uy, and Cecilia Canlapan. Veteran balladeer Many Bade will perform together with a band whose members are seasoned players from well-known clubs in Manila. The Fiesta Filipina Dance Troupe has also expressed interest to join the concert, so with other familiar names in the entertainment industry.
Tickets at $20 will be distributed shortly. To order tickets, please contact the ff: Lolong Marzan (416.953.2005); Minda Neri (416.621.4985); Zeny Uy (416.292.4354); and Ricky Caluen (416.816.0653). Tickets will also be available at O.L.A. and at the gates beginning 6:00 p.m. on January 21, the concert date. The concert starts at 6:30 p.m.
So far, “Operation Tabang” has already remitted $10,000 to the Archdiocese of Cagayan de Oro, c/o Msgr. Colombo Villamil, which in turn will distribute part of the funds to the Diocese of Iligan and other parishes affected by the typhoon.
