CARP raises cash and goods for Sendong victims
TORONTO (December 22, 2011) -The Canadian Aid & Relief Project (CARP) – a Toronto-based organization founded and headed by local family physician, Dr. Francisco Portugal, has launched a disaster relief collection for the victims of Typhoon Sendong, which struck the areas of the Visayas islands, Northern Mindanao, and Palawan on Sunday, December 18th.
The typhoon, named the “world’s deadliest storm for 2011”, left 957 dead as of the December 20th, according to official sources. Unofficial numbers note the deceased at over 1,010 persons. Hardest hit were the cities of Cagayan de Oro and Iligan, which were unaccustomed to the amount of rainfall received on Sunday. Several relief efforts are underway by various governmental and non-governmental agencies. More help is needed, however, given the gravity of the devastation and the thousands of displaced people who now must strive to begin life anew.
CARP has begun its fundraising collection and to-date has received $5,250 in donations ($5000 from Howard Pharmacy, $250 from Angel ng Tahanan, and $50 from Mr. Jose Fajardo). More funds are needed to support CARP’s relief operations and, in addition, food, medicines and clothing are urgently needed.
