New Filipino-Canadian elementary and high school graduates, who have excelled in their studies, will be recognized and honoured by the Filipino Centre, Toronto, as well as have the chance to win top awards in the competition for 2005 Outstanding Students.
The awards ceremony will take place on Saturday, September 10, during the Cabbagetown Festival.
Deadline for filing the application forms for FCT’s Outstanding Student Awards is July 15. Please pick up the forms at the Centre or download the forms from its Website at www.filipinocentre.com. For more information, call 416-928-9355.
Let’s learn Tagalog
The much-awaited Tagalog class has finally materialized. It started on June 9 at six p.m. and every Thursday thereafter at the Filipino Centre. More students are expected to join the group, as several parents sincerely want their kids to learn the language and be able to speak it.
In the meantime, until a permanent Tagalog teacher is available, Lynda Javier will be the teacher – a task added to her already full burden as FCT president and CEO.
“I have no other choice,” she explained. “There is a demand for a Tagalog class. But no qualified teacher has yet volunteered.”
The one-hour conversational Tagalog session is open to teenagers and older. It will run for 10 weekly sessions, on a Thursday, from 6 to 7 p.m. A donation to the FCT of $5 per student per session is requested.
