Migrante party calls for absentee voting registration
Migrante Sectoral Party Canada (MSP Canada) calls on all Filipino citizens in Canada to go out and register for Overseas Absentee Voting (OAV) before its deadline on October 31.
“We encourage our kababayans in Canada to register as overseas absentee voters to exercise their right to vote in next year’s mid-term elections in the Philippines,” said Jonathan Canchela, national coordinator of MSP in Canada.
Under the Overseas Absentee Voting Act of 2003 (RA No. 9189), all citizens of the Philippines abroad, who are not otherwise disqualified by law, at least eighteen (18) years of age on the day of elections, may now participate in the Philippine national elections. In next year’s mid-term elections, registered OAV voters can vote for senators and party-list representatives.
All qualified Filipinos in Canada may register for OAV in person at the Philippine Embassy in Ottawa, Philippine Consulate General offices in Toronto and Vancouver. Photocopy of passport is required for OAV registration.
Filipinos living in Montreal and nearby areas will have the chance to register for OAV when Embassy officials visit the place on October 19 (4:00 pm-9:00 pm) and October 20 (9:00 am – 6:00 pm) at the Philippine Community Centre, 4708 Van Horne Avenue, Montreal.
“It’s equally important that overseas Filipinos encourage their family and relatives back home to register and vote for upcoming elections”, Canchela added.
As the OAV registration deadline draws near, MSP Canada strongly urges the Philippine Embassy and Consulate officials here to make a final push in promoting the OAV. Mobile OAV registration should be made available to Filipino communities or groups especially during weekends.
