Afable art exhibit

The best artworks in the collection of artist Antonio Jun Afable will go on display in a solo exhibition at the Consulate Gallery and the public is invited to see it.

The show entitled Retrospective XX- A Revisit to Old Works formally opens on August 5, 2005 at 6:30 p.m. at the Gallery located in the Philippine Consulate Offices at 161 Eglinton Ave. Suite 800 (east of Yonge St.) in Toronto. It runs until August 26.

The exhibit collection features select pieces representing various styles and media from Afable’s creations for over twenty years as an artist.

“I held on to them because these are my best artworks. They reflect my story, the places and events that have defined my life and times in art,” he said. Now the public can share in his treasures of drawings, sketches, paintings, collages and sculptures, some old and some minted just a few years ago.

Afable’s art metamorphosis into the present took him through uncommon paths. Graduating in Fine Arts from Manila’s University of Santo Tomas in 1981 he flourished for sometime in the traditional styles. His various jobs as a Designer in Fashion Accessory, Industrial, Graphics and other associated fields for a local Japanese firm soon influenced his direction towards a new dimension and art form in Contemporary or Modern Art called Non-Representational Art.

His passion for art got him actively involved with numerous art exhibitions and groups in the Philippines, then later in Italy. He was a member in the Art Association of the Philippines, Pintor Kulapol of Tuy Batangas, Manila Artists Group, and Degli Artisti in Rome.

Afable’s masterful skill and distinctive style have not gone unnoticed. He has been honored with numerous awards, among them the Second Prize in On the Spot Painting Contest in Manilas City Gallery in 1979, and a Bronze Medal from Romes 7th Concorzo Di Pittura Estemporanea in 1985.

Coming to Toronto in 2000 he was warmly accepted into the august circle of the Philippine Artist Group in Canada. Today he continues to earn recognition for Filipino artists by participating in local juried shows and winning awards. With his creative versatility in both the traditional and modern styles of art he has also become a pillar of the PAG, becoming its treasurer while contributing fresh blood and vision to the group’s continuing saga of promoting Philippine art to a Canadian audience.
