ATLANTIC CITY, NJ.-22 delegates and registered guests from AFCA made a significant mark on the recently completed September 2-5 19th Convention of the 3,000-strong National Council of Philippine American Canadian Accountants (NCPACA) held in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
About 300 Filipino accountants from eleven Filipino accounting organizations all over North America converged at the Sheraton Atlantic City Convention Center to spend the Labour Day weekend at the Sheraton, the famed site of one of the Miss America Beauty Pageants, which is only a couple of blocks away from the famous Boardwalk along the Atlantic beach.
The convention featured several technical sessions on the Enron instigated U.S. Sarbanes-Oxley Act, forensic accounting and auditing techniques, as well as NCPACA’s business sessions. The sites for the next two conventions are San Francisco for 2006 and Toronto (Niagara Falls) for 2007, to be hosted by the PICPA-USA, San Francisco, and the AFCA-Toronto groups, respectively. The biennial elections, which occurred during this year’s convention, resulted in the election of AFCA founding president Winston Lim as external vice president of NCPACA. As well, of the nine new NCPACA Councilors invested into the NCPACA Board of Councilors, two came from AFCA, namely AFCA director Frank Aquino and Winston Lim.
The technical sessions highlighted the Sarbanes Oxley Act, a heavy-hitting U.S. law passed to combat fraud such as that which occurred in the cases of Enron, Worldcom and Canada’s Nortel, which is subject to the law because it is listed in U.S. stock exchanges. Sitting in the five-member expert panel was AFCA president Julito Longkines, a senior audit manager at Toronto’s Kraft Berger LLP, chartered accountants. Mr. Longkines holds both an Illinois CPA and Philippine CPA designations.
AFCA delegates and guests reaped a number of awards and trophies in the social part of the activities, namely: Winning the 3rd place trophy in the hotly contested Paligsahan Night Skit competitions among the member organizations with its rendition of “The Miss Galaxy 2005 Pageant”, dance competition trophies by Buddy Ibe and partner Josie, guests Chris and Mely Beltran, and singing recognition awards by guest Carmen Hauyon and AFCA director Frank Aquino. During the formal gala dinner, the AFCA group presented the main entertainment feature, the Royal Waltz, which was choreographed by guests Leonie and Joe Manzanares.
The Royal Waltz dance group and Paligsahan Night presentation were composed of: AFCA past president Marlo Mallari and Carolyn Mallari, AFCA president Julito Longkines and Minda Longkines, AFCA founding president Winston Lim and Princess Lim, AFCA director Frank Aquino and Sol Aquino, AFCA member Dom and Tita Badilla, AFCA exec. vice pres.
