TORONTO–To commemorate the 108th anniversary of Philippine Independence, the Philippine Consulate General wishes to invite the Filipino-Canadian community to participate in the festivities and events in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) and vicinities, as follows:
• June 9, Friday– “Open House” at the Philippine Consulate General (161 Eglinton Avenue East, Suite 800) from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
• June 10, Saturday–Philippine Flag-raising ceremony at the City Civic Centre of Vaughan, 12 noon to 3:00 p.m., organized by the Filipino-Canadian Association of Vaughan, in coordination with the Philippine Heritage Band, Filipino Seniors Club of Vaughan, Leyteño Association of Ontario, First Filipino Canadians and BIBAK. This is the first year that the City Council of Vaughan has proclaimed June 10, 2006 as “Filipino Day.
“Pista ng Bayan” organized by Filipino Centre, Toronto, 3:00 p.m. onwards, Nathan Philips Square, Toronto (continued on Sunday, June 11, 2006)
Philippine Independence Day Gala, a joint celebration by the Kalayaan 2006 of Mississauga and the Philippine Independence Day Council (PIDC), 6:00 p.m., Double Tree International Plaza Hotel, 655 Dixon Road, Etobicoke. Philippine Independence Day Gala Night Dinner/Dance by the Hamilton Filipino Community, Chandelier Banquet Hall, Stoney Creek. Highlight of the event is the recognition of those Filipinos who made an impact in the community in the year 2005.
• June 11, Sunday–Flag-raising ceremony at the Hamilton Filipino Community Center, 1275 King Street East, Hamilton, Ontario, 1:00 p.m. followed by a Roman Catholic Mass celebrated by a Filipino priest
Philippine Independence Week Flag raising and Opening Ceremonies organized by the Markham Federation of Filipino Canadians (MFFC), Markham Civic Centre, 101 Town Centre Boulevard, Markham, 11:00 a.m.
“PAG Revisits Markham” Independence Arts Exhibition Opening Ceremonies by Philippine Artists Group of Canada, presented by Philippine Consulate General and co-sponsored by the Philippine National Bank and MFFC, Markham Civic Centre, 101 Town Centre Boulevard., 2:00 p.m.
Kalayaan 2006 Picnic, Mississauga Valley Community Centre Park, 1275, Mississauga Valley Boulevard, Mississauga, Ontario organized by the Mississauga-based Kalayaan 2006, 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
• June 12, Monday–Flag-raising organized by the Flag-raising Committee (Philippine Consulate General, National Congress of Filipino Canadians, Association of Caviteños in Canada, Ontario Filipino Women’s Club and Filipino Parents Association, Toronto City Hall, 8 am
Flag – raising ceremony organized by the Brampton Filipino Seniors Club, 9 am, Brampton City Hall
• June 17, Saturday–Salu-salo sa Earl Bales Park, Toronto, a family picnic for everyone to commemorate the Philippine Independence sponsored by the Philippine Independence Day Council (PIDC). • June 18, Sunday–Philippine Independence Day celebration of Filipino-Canadian Seventh Day Adventist Church, Canada Christian College, 50 Gervais Drive, Toronto, 5:00 – 7:00 pm
• June 19, Monday–Traditional Wreath Laying Ceremonies to commemorate Dr. Jose Rizal’s Anniversary by the Knights of Rizal and Affiliates, Earl Bales Park, Toronto, 5:00 p.m.
The community is also encouraged to attend in other events celebrating the National Day.
