Makabagong Kalayaan showcases raw local talent

Makabagong Kalayaan showcases raw local talent

TORONTO–“It was astounding. I never thought that there was so much raw talent in the community raring to carve a name in the local entertainment circles.”

Thus commented a community mediaperson who saw and liked “Makabagong Kalayaan,” a cultural presentation the Filipino-Canadian Seventh Day Adventist Church staged at the Canada Christian College on June 18.

Even Philippine Consul General in Toronto Alejandro Mosquera, who delivered the keynote message during the program, was amazed by the dazzling performances. “The performers reflected true community spirit and the splendour of our Filipino culture,” he said.

What more can one ask for when one enters a big hall, sits down and relaxes, enjoys the tunes and dances performed by Filipino-Canadians, and shares food with fellow members of the community … and all for free, because of the graciousness of the presentation’s sponsors?

Program coordinator Noel Perada said it was all for the church and for all those who believe in reliving the rich cultural heritage of the land of their birth, the Philippines, and the joyful approach to life Filipinos are known for.

Perada cited the shining performances that drew admiration from the audience. The performers included the VOZ Mt. Zion Group that sang Lupa; Mark Ebora and Samantha Magill who danced the Tinikling; Baverley Nares who crooned Dakilang Lahi; the FilCan and Mississauga youth who swayed to the music of Pandanggo sa Ilaw and Pamaypay, respectively; the trio of Ina, Baverley and Alpha who gave the audience a glimpse of Philippine Independence history; the Bramalea Children’s Group who danced the Polka Bal and La Jota; the Bibak group that gave life to Sayaw Igorot; and once more, the FilCan Youth for their patriotic rendition of Ako ay Pilipino. The dances were choreographed by Asher Tamdang.

Perada also lauded Dr. and Mrs. Silvino Decena Jr., Pastors Daniel Catangay, Gerry Pasikatan and Charles Ojano, and numerous other donors, patrons and supporters for their contributions to make the show a success.

He also prided in the committee work done by Bal Yujuico, Jessica Decena, Sammy Adriatico, Angie Buado, Carmelita Stewart, Frank Navarra, Alex Salandanan, Gerry Manglinong, Virgie Villarias, Loida Catangay, Minda Caballero, Connie Arevalo, Cresencia Parlee, Helen Del Mundo, Larry Torres, Ariel Ramos, Dem Fronda, Paul Esguerra, and Emerson Desame.
