Alex Chiu for Councillor in Ward 8, Markham

After successfully serving residents for 21 years, I have decided to seek an eighth term as Councillor for Ward 8 in Markham. Since 1985 I have represented Ward 8 and take great pride in the fact that I live in the community, which I represent. My family and I moved to Milliken Mills in 1981 and since then, I have continually been involved in local schools, churches, children’s recreational programs, and community fund raising events.

As Councillor I have been able to play a key role in the orderly development of Milliken Mills. To ensure this, the boundaries for Ward 8 have been redefined. The new borders of Ward 8 stretch from McCowan Road in the east to Highway 404 in the west, Steeles Avenue in the south to Hwy 407 in the north.

Given the chance to serve another term in office, I will continue to ensure the well being of both the residents and the business community in Ward 8. Below are just a few of my goals:

The Fence project–Many homeowners have already benefited from this improvement project, and I plan on continuing it in eastern Ward 8. Not only do individual homeowners benefit from this project, the entire community benefits from this clean up. The high quality and aesthetically pleasing fences also result in improved property values.

Main Street Milliken–I look forward to working with Council on the secondary plan for Main Street Milliken (Old Kennedy Road), to ensure the area is developed with high standards and quality construction. Main Street Milliken will become a centrepiece and pleasurable destination similar to other main streets in Markham.

Milliken Mills Library –Serving the community since 1991, the Milliken Mills Library is now ready for expansion. I look forward to working with Council on its expansion and ensure it meets the needs of our growing, diverse and contemporary community.

Public Transportation–Over the past two years we have witnessed major improvements in transportation. However, there is still more work to be accomplished and I will work closely with both Markham Council and York Region to ensure that Ward 8 is adequately serviced.

Taxes–To keep property taxes as low as possible. I will stress fiscal responsibility.

Over the past 21 years I have developed excellent working relationship with my fellow Council members and staff. Another term in office will allow me to capitalize on these relationships to ensure that Ward 8 receives top priority at Markham Council.
