Realtor croons for charity
An award winning salesperson is still full of energy and spirit. After working for over 40 years, (24 years in the Medical field and 18 years in Real Estate) Gerry has decided to do more charity work. He will be doing a series of shows in Casa Manila every last Thursday of every month.
The proceeds from this endeavor will go to his two favorite charities namely MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) and the Sick Kids Foundation.
Although this is his first time to raise funds for MADD, Gerry had been involved in Sick Kids’ Herbie Fund as early as 1980 when Eric Dacumos, the tourist boy from the Philippines needed a heart operation here in Toronto.
His last involvement with the Sick Kids was for Herbie Fund Appeal To Heal For Querubin. Gerry said those experiences gave him a very rewarding feeling especially “when I see those kids getting well and living normal lives.”
He has also done many successful fund raising like Skate-a-thon, Mall Shows, Dinner Dance and Filipino Kids vs. Filipino Adults hockey game. Funds from skate-a-thon were channeled through Philippine National Red Cross and Canadian National Red Cross where the beneficiaries were the calamity victims of the Philippines. The hockey game proceeds went to Peel Memorial Hospital. Gerry is still very active salesperson and according to his broker David Lazaru, he is doing better than some agents half his age. His broker added that Gerry is a very good entertainer and excellent real estate negotiator. ‘Songs and Laughter’ is the title of the shows that will run for a year. Upon seeing the promotional flyers for this shows, people wonder how can a singer mix The Beatles style with that of Frank Sinatra, but he said the only way to find out is to go to the shows
Gerry’s motivation to get involved with MADD became more intense after seeing too many tragic and fatal accidents involving drunk driving right here in Toronto. As a matter of fact he is proclaiming himself as ambassador for responsible driving. On a couple of occasions, he saw an advertisement in a TTC bus that read “Lawyers For Impaired”. He was so upset he phoned the TTC advertising department and told them the wrong message is being perceived by the public. It is like saying don’t worry about impaired driving, someone will take care of you. That ads are bad enough anywhere, but to see it in a TTC bus is totally outrageous, he said.
