‘Mad Junkologist’ from BC back in TO
Doctor Recycle, the Mad Junkologist from British Columbia is coming back to do his rounds in Toronto Oct 31-Nov 17.
Oliver Samonte, aka Dr. Recycle, the popular mad junkologist of BC is going to be presenting at two teachers’ conventions in Toronto. On Nov. 1, he will be presenting at ACSI’s Convention (Association of Christian Schools International), and on Nov 17, at STAO’s Conference (Science Teachers’ Association of Ontario). He will be also be at various schools and organizations in between, including a whole day event for Scouts on Nov 10, to help cubs and scouts earn their recycling badges.
Oliver’s story is very inspiring as he was able to turn his sad childhood experience of living in poverty in the Philippines into something positive. He created Junkology which almost instantly became very popular with kids and teachers. Surrey Teachers Association dubbed it as an “All Time Favourite” on their workshop selection at their annual conference where Oliver presents every year. He was featured on CBC’s On the Road Again with Wayne Rostad in 2004. and in the Weather Network in 2003.
The motto of this favorite program is “Creative Re-use of Man Made Refuse”. Students and teachers really enjoy this hands-on workshop, not just because it is fun and creative, but also because of its relevance in re-using common household refuse. Dr. Recycle’s T-L-C (Think-Laugh-Create) formula is very effective for all types of kids. They all respond very enthusiastically with Dr. Recycle’s challenge of creating fun and functional projects without using any glue.
Dr. Recycle’s chess set, out of film canisters and pizza box is on display at Science World British Columbia. He also provided a propeller project, out of straw and paper cups, for Mc Donald’s Fun Time Magazine. He has written two booklets on creative recycling for kids and teachers. He also invented a board game that helps kids to think of ways to care for the environment.
Oliver’s other passion is writing songs for children and teaching Sunday School.
