UP Alumni-Toronto marks 30th year
The University of the Philippines Alumni Association, through its president Noel Cruz, has announced that UPAA is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, and a Grand Ball will he held at the Marriott Hotel Toronto Eaton Centre on November 3rd, 2007. The event is also a fundraiser for the association to provide a professorial chair for the alma mater. Cruz is calling all UP alumni, their family and friends, to attend this festive event, and other events in the planning board.
UPAA has also raised funds for scholarship for deserving students back home; in the local scene, it has established a mentoring project to assist recent alumni in professional accreditation and job search. UPAA is an active member of the Philippine Association of Colleges and Universities Alumni Association -Toronto, an umbrella organization of some 15-association members that aim for the common good.
UP alumni everywhere have always served the Filipino community and the mainstream community as a whole. They are known as dedicated and well-trained professionals and workers, and serve their adopted country well, as they remain nationalistic and caring of their home country as well.
In a meeting with UPAA president Noel Cruz, he stated that “ We take pride as graduates of a beloved university that among others, have taught us freedom of thought and social responsibility, and trained us in our chosen professions.”
UP president Emerlinda Roman, who was in Toronto for a visit last spring has laid out plans under her tenure, one of which is to continue UP’s mandate as a national university, whereby everything being done for the university is done in the service of the nation. UP has seven campuses in 12 different locations throughout the country , providing 644 degree programs in all disciplines, embracing all interests and inclinations. According to President Roman, U. P. will face the next century by securing its place as a distinguished Filipino university in a highly complex, technologically advanced and globally competitive world.
Alumni all over the world rally behind President Roman. During the General Convention and Alumni reunion of the UP Alumni Association in America held in San Francisco, USA early this month, President Emerlinda Roman garnered a whopping US$1.59 M in actual and pledged donations . The monies will be added to the coffers to implement the goals set by the university.
UPAA president Noel Cruz added that UP is celebrating its Centenary next year, and more events are planned.
