Filipino Idols to perform at Carassauga

FILIPINO Idol semi-finalists on two age categories will advance to the finals at the Philippine pavilion during the coming three-day Carassauga Festival in Mississauga on May 29, 2004.

Culture Philippines of Ontario (CPO) launched a “Search of Filipino Singing Idols” early this year and held an audition and the first round contest at the Kalayaan Community Centre. Based on the numbers and voice quality of the participants, it is fair to say that locally emerging Filipino artists have a good chance of competing and winning the Canadian Idol. Culture Philippines of Ontario has been the proud host of the Philippine pavilion at this annual Carassauga Festival since it was established in 1985. CPO’s objective is to retain and share the Filipino cultural heritage by providing music, dance and performing arts instructions to the young children in Canada.

Recently, a children rondalla band has been added to CPO’s programs. During this year’s school break in March, CPO arranged a busload of its performers to attend a dance workshop at Walt Disney World in Florida. The dancers also performed during the Music Days Festival inside Disney’s Epcot Centre.
This year’s Carassauga, a Festival of Cultures in the city of Mississauga, will run from May 28, 29, and 30, 2004. Cultures from about 19 countries will be showcased at various locations across the city during this three-day festival. The opening and first Full show starts at 7:30 pm on Friday, May 28, 2004.

The Philippine pavilion will be at the Hershey Centre, 5500 Rose Cherry Place (West of Dixie Road, North of Matheson), in Mississauga. The theme of the Philippine pavilion for this year is “Philippine Wedding”. The Philippine pavilion is one of the most popular pavilions in this Carassauga. It posted 14,000 visitors during the past two years and has won the most outstanding pavilion award and top passport sellers’ award just last year. It offers lots of food, music and fun for everyone. Beers and fruit drinks will be available. The famous halo-halo, pork barbeque, and possibly lechon will be available at reasonable prices.

The pavilion will be full of shops with various clothes, craft and Philippine wares. Young children will again get the chance to experience the traditional “pabitin” where goodies can really be up for grabs.
Advance Carassauga passports are available at $8. At the door, passports are $10 each. Children 12 and below can enter for free. The passport will entitle its holder to enter all the 19 participating pavilions. Come and visit the Philippine pavilion and enjoy the traditional Filipino hospitality.
