Filipino community groups in Toronto celebrate 2024 Migrant Workers’ Day

TORONTO – The Mt. Zion Filipino Seventh-Day Adventist Church in Toronto was abuzz with activity and camaraderie as the Migrant Workers Office (MWO) and Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) led the celebration of the 2024 Migrant Workers’ Day. Under the leadership of OIC and Welfare Officer Benny Reyes, Assistant Secretaries Emmalyn Baylon, Cathy Romulo, Chris Prado, and Liaison Heads Junice Osunero and Geofrey Mercado, the event brought together the Filipino community and their supporters for a day of recognition, support, and joy.
The celebration was bolstered by the presence and collaboration of the Philippine Consulate General in Toronto, represented by Consul RJ Sumague. Additionally, well wishes were conveyed through video messages from Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac and OWWA Administrator Arnel Ignacio, underscoring the significance of the day.
articipants were treated to a series of informative sessions detailing the programs and services offered by the Philippine Consulate General, MWO, OWWA, and Social Security System (SSS). Esteemed guest speakers, including Mr. Nima Lari from the Ministry of Labour and Ms. Maria Deanna Santos, provided valuable updates on immigration laws impacting migrant workers and international students.
The day was not only about information and support but also about fun and entertainment. Numerous raffle prizes and musical performances added a festive atmosphere, bringing smiles and excitement to all in attendance.
Long-standing community partners, including the Mt. Zion Seventh-Day Adventist Church, North York Community House, Catholic Community Services of York Region, The Neighborhood Organization, Canadian Caregivers Assistance Organization, Kababayan Multi-Cultural Centre, and Filipino Centre Toronto were integral to the event’s success. Their continued support underscores the strong network of assistance available to the Filipino community in Toronto.
Special recognition was given to the women of the Filipino Achievers Toronto group, whose dedication and hard work were pivotal in making the event a resounding success. Their contributions exemplify the collaborative spirit that defines the Filipino community in Toronto.
The 2024 Migrant Workers’ Day celebration in Toronto not only honored the contributions of migrant workers but also reinforced the bonds of community and support that sustain them.
