On Saturday, Sept. 19, 2009 Muslims worldwide celebrated Eid al-Fitr (Festival of Breaking the Fast).
The month-long fast of Ramadan begins in the 10th month of the lunar or Islamic calendar. It was in this month that Muslims believe the Qur’an was first revealed to Prophet Mohammed from the Angel Gabrial approximately 1400 years ago. Unchanged since then, the Qur’an is venerated as the last revealed Scriptures from God after the Gospel of Jesus Christ, the Pslams of David and the Torah of Moses.
During this “Month of Mercy”, Muslims fast from sun up to sun down. They abstain not only from food and drink but from committing ‘bad’ deeds all for the sake of God and cleansing their souls. And with the increase of charitable acts to the needy and each other, the warmth of the Muslim community during Ramadan is an absolutely beautiful experience to be part of!
On the afternoon of Eid, a gathering took place at Thomson Memorial Park in Scarborough, Ontario. Muslim-Filipinos who had gotten to know one another through the Toronto’s Muslim community, came together to celebrate, eat and share ideas of becoming an official organization.
The open-discussion was enthusiastic and positive, touching on ideas and issues concerning poverty, discrimination, education, history, unity and support. At the end of it all, the group, which consisted of more than 20 families, happily decided that this meeting would officially be the first of many for The Muslim-Filipino Association of Canada (MFAC).
