Local poets rhyme-off in support of typhoon victims
TORONTO -A planned performance of spoken word poetry has suddenly transformed into an emergency fundraiser to help typhoon victims in the Philippines. On Saturday, October 3 at 7pm, Kapisanan Philippine Centre for Arts and Culture (Kapisanan) will be hosting Charity is also our Second Language, a live poetry slam featuring young Filipino-Canadian poets. The event is being held in dedication to the millions of Filipinos affected by typhoon Ondoy, which tore through the Philippine archipelago earlier this week and caused massive flooding in Manila and surrounding provinces.
Admission costs pay-what-you-can and all proceeds go towards relief efforts currently underway in the country. Attendees are asked to bring non-perishable food items, toiletries and used clothing for collection and distribution to families made homeless in the aftermath of the storm. Kapisanan is also accepting donations by cash, cheque or online via Paypal to support Global Medic, a volunteer agency deploying a mission to the Philippines in order to provide safe drinking water.
Originally called Poetry is Our Second Language, the unofficial Nuit Blanche event is sure to present an evocative mix of verbal magic, wordplay, creative rhymes and international solidarity -a testament to the city’s artistic talent and dynamism.-
