Pinoy Fiesta celebrates Pahiyas Festival

Pinoy Fiesta celebrates Pahiyas Festival

The fiesta is part and parcel of Filipino culture. Through good times and bad times, the Filipino fiesta must go on. The Philippines has more than 7,100 islands and each city and barrio has at least one local fiesta of its own, usually on the feast of its patron saint or to celebrate harvest season, so that there is always a fiesta going on somewhere in the country. The Philippine fiesta is being celebrated with all the pomp and pageantry that the fun-loving Filipinos can manage.

Now on its second year, Pinoy Fiesta is celebrating Pahiyas Festival as its main theme and will be held on October 17–18, 2008 at The Gateway Centre for New Canadians, 3450 Wolfedale Road, Mississauga. Pahiyas Festival is one of the many Philippine fiestas which originated in Lucban, Quezon and is referred by many as a fiesta to end all fiestas. Every year, thousands of tourists and holiday makers flock the historic town of Lucban dubbed as the Summer Capital of Quezon Province to attend the annual Pahiyas Festival. During the Pahiyas Festival, each household tries to outdo each other in friendly competition as they vie for honor of recognizing their creativity by decorating their houses with colorful “Kiping” and other agricultural harvest.

Pinoy Fiesta is an event organized by The Gateway Centre for New Canadians to raise funds for its many settlement programs as well as to showcase the Filipino cultures and traditions not only from among Filipinos in Canada but to the mainstream Canadians. This year’s event will be very much different not only from the last year’s event but also from other fiesta celebration being organized by other Filipino organizations. This is the first time that a fiesta event will be highlighted by a specific fiesta theme as well as interactive where everybody attending the event can participate in all its many activities.

To start with, to give the fiesta visitors a glimpse of what the theme of the event is all about, a Pahiyas mini-exhibit will be put up to provide historical background of the Pahiyas Festival as well as the Province of Quezon. It will also have a Pahiyas Heritage Plaza where houses will be set up recreating the Pahiyas houses with live cultural presentations. Bazaar booths are also available offering a variety of items plus a free local cuisines for all the visitors to indulge. There are also game booths and the traditional Filipino parlor games like palosebo, pabitin, and many more where everyone can participate in the duration of the two-day event. Entertainments will be kicked off by an opening show entitled “Celebrate Pinoy…Celebrate Pahiyas! at 6:30 p.m. on October 17 to be followed at 9 p.m. by an all-night dance rock party featuring live bands para sa mga kabataan. The next day, October 18, will be a whole day event which will start at 10 a.m. until 10 p.m. with entertainment to start at 12 p.m. with a variety game show, dance crew competition, a sing-and-look-alike contest, search for stand-up comedian, martial arts demo, and many more and a restaging of a concert entitled “Sine…Sine Musika” as its closing show.

Bring the entire family, invite your friends, Filipinos or non-Filipinos, and celebrate with us to experience the Pahiyas Festival. Siguradong ang lahat ng dadalo ay mag-eenjoy dahil ang Pinoy Fiesta ang magiging taunang pinaka-fiesta ng lahat ng fiesta. Admission for the said event is only $2 with access to all the activities. Show ticket is only $5 where you have the chance to participate in the game shows and win exciting surprise door prizes. All tickets are available from several outlets and at the door. Interested parties for sponsorship and bazaar booths may call Fiesta Hotline at 905–848–1106 and look for Bunny.
