TORONTO–The KAPISANAN Philippine Centre for Arts & Culture, Canada’s premiere Filipino-Canadian cultural hub, has set the stage for the Filipino-Canadian renaissance in Toronto. From Top Chef competitions, to musicians on world stages; from the fashion runways to international galleries; from the New York theatre to Youtube sensations; Filipino talent is finally getting the recognition it deserves. KAPISANAN once again will showcase world class Filipino talent with the 8th annual KULTURA Filipino Arts Festival from August 7 to August 11, 2013.
For eight successive years, KULTURA has been the venue for future stars to make their debut and established artists their homecomings. KULTURA 2013 is a 5-day affair leading up to a grand finale at the always amazing Artscape Wychwood Barns. This year’s festival promises to serve up more food, more art and more flavour than ever before.
Following its wild popularity the Philippine Culinary Competition (PCC) will be returning for a second year. This year’s theme will be Kain Kalye: Filipino Street Eats, where Toronto’s best Filipino restaurants and chefs will go head to head with their own interpretations of Filipino roadside cuisine. KULTURA provides a balance of new takes on old classics and techniques passed on from Lola’s (Grandmother’s) kitchen, allowing Toronto to experience the reasons why Philippine cuisine has been getting so much mainstream attention.
The vibrant KULTURA Live! Stage comes back with another year of Original Pilipino Music (OPM). The KULTURA Live! Stage has housed stellar Filipino-Canadian acts like Maylee Todd (2013 SoCAN Songwriter Award nominee), Ricky Tillo (Lead Guitarist for Lady Gaga), August Rigo (Producer/Songwriter for Justin Beiber, One Direction, Usher), and Hooded Fang (Polaris Prize Nominee). Returning for a second year is DATU, a modern tribal music crew that has been making waves with their hip hop and electronic-infused indigenous sound. On the other side of the spectrum, making their KULTURA debut, is the Fiesta Filipina Dance Troupe of Toronto who just celebrated their 45th year of sharing their unique take on Philippine folk arts to Canada and the world. This year will showcase another lineup of impressive Filipino talent that, like its food, is full of unexpected flavour. Leading up to the Philippine Culinary Competition and KULTURA Live! is a week of events highlighting new Filipino works. This will include visual arts (Bayanihan: An Interactive Art Installation), the final exhibition of KAPISANAN’s flagship program, Clutch Vol. 5 ([Kontra] Bida), theatre (Carlos Bulosan Theatre’s play readings), more music (Tambay Nights @ KAPISANAN), and more food (Ilustrados).
Steeped in tradition, but pushing the boundaries of Filipino- Canadian cultural expression, the 8th year of KAPISANAN’s yearly art festival is ready to make its case as to why Filipino flavour tastes like the next big thing.
