Curcumin natural depression treatment
Phytotherapy Research published an interesting study recently on curcumin, the main polyphenol in the spice turmeric: it shows that it is at least as effective in treating depression as fluoxetine (Prozac) without dangerous side effects. Conducted by researchers in India, the group assessed people who took curcumin and Prozac capsules; the findings reflect the “first clinical evidence that curcumin may be used as an effective and safe modality for treatment in patients with Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) without concurrent suicidal ideation or other psychotic disorders.”
Turmeric is a member of the ginger family, and has numerous other proven benefits including relief from acne and clogged arteries to improving inflammation-related ailments and insomnia. While experts point out that the findings are preliminary, the results are promising for those concerned with the over-prescription of pharmaceuticals, including anti-depressants, in North America. Natural News suggests enjoying curcumim as a tea by boiling four cups of water with 1/4 cup of grated fresh turmeric root (or 1 tablespoon ground turmeric) with 2 tablespoons of grated fresh ginger root (serves four). Add lemon or natural sweetener as desired.
Unlike the prescription drug, curcumin treats depression safely, without the potential for suicidal thoughts, weight gain and unhealthy changes in blood pressure.
