The Philippine Reporter believes that research matters. Hence, it is publishing information on some of the latest research gems significant to everyone.

These studies are lifted from the SPAR (Social Policy Analysis and Research) Monitor, an inventory of recent social research information relevant to social policy. — Editors

This bulletin is a quick inventory of recent social research information. Its purpose is to promptly disseminate the most current external and internal research relevant to social policy. It is published by City of Toronto’s Social Development, Finance and Aministration Division.

Weight and Social Mobility: Taking the Long View on Childhood Obesity
by Joanna Venator and Richard V. Reeves, Brookings Institute, January 8, 2015.

More than one-third of adults and around one-fifth of teenagers are obese. Childhood obesity is more common among low-income children and those with less-educated parents. People earning lower wages are more likely to have higher Body Mass Indices and have an increased chance of being overweight or obese.

Some of the reasons:

• Healthy foods tend to cost more than unhealthy foods

• Low income individuals are more likely to live in neighborhoods with less access to grocery stores and/or fresh food

• Poverty dense areas also tend to have high levels of sedentariness which has been attributed to the difficulty of exercising outside in areas with higher levels of violence

• Obesity may worsen labor market outcomes due to discrimination on the part of employers

The Canadian Unemployment Rate — With and Without Alberta’s Boom

by Ron Kneebone, The School of Public Policy, November 2014.

Over the past two decades there has occurred a shift in economic power from central Canada to other parts of the country. Saskatchewan and Newfoundland and Labrador have both claimed a noticeably larger share of Canada’s GDP since 1995 but easily the largest shift of economic output has been to Alberta. This adjustment in the Canadian economy is most easily observed in the large migration between provinces of Canadians seeking employment.

• Over the period 1995-2014 Alberta has maintained an average annual rate of growth in employment of 2.50 per cent

• This is well above the 1.44 percentage rate of employment growth in second-place Ontario and double the average rate of growth in neighbouring British Columbia

• If Alberta’s job creation boom hadn’t happened then Canada’s present unemployment rate would be 2.5 percentage points higher than it was in mid-2000

Canada 2014 Final Report conducted by the Environics Institute, in partnership with the Institute on Governance, January 5, 2015.

The AmericasBarometer is a multi-country public opinion survey on democratic values and behaviours in the Americas. The inclusion of Canada in this international research project is significant given the country’s long standing adherence to a democratic system, its tradition of good governance, and because of its proximity as an alternative to the U.S.

This research provides:

• Catalyst for interchange between Canadians and Latin American/Caribbean organizations and peoples

• A unique source of knowledge on governance and public policy for the Canadian polity, based on long-term tracking of public opinion over time

• A data base for scholars and post-secondary students, as a source of information and tool for learning

• A valuable basis of comparison across regions and socioeconomic segments of the Canadian population
