St. Jamestown fest set on June 11
All systems go for this year’s St. Jamestown Festival which is scheduled on June 11 (Sunday).
St. Jamestown complex in downtown Toronto is one of the the most culturally diverse place in the province of Ontario. It is also known to have the highest density of immigrants and visible minorities population.
Gene Lara, the chairperson of the festival revealed that in the St. Jamestown complex the Filipinos constitute the biggest population in the area, followed by the Sri-Lankans and then Chinese.
Other residents of St. Jamestown come from different countries of the world, she said.
Lara pointed out that the St. Jamestown complex which is composed of 20 high rise buildings is a settlers’ paradise.
The St. Jamestown Festival is a yearly event supported by different private companies, non-government agencies, and government agencies in the municipal, provincial , and federal levels.
For this year, the PNB Remittance Corporation Canada headed by Vice President Manuel Arnaldo and concurrently the corporation’s chief operating officer, leads the group of major sponsors which include TD Canada Trust, Salvation Army, Fresh Start Program of Canaadian Heritage, and the government of the City of Toronto.
St. Jamestown Festival will start with a parade at 10:00 p.m. with the Philippine Heritage Band leading the pack. After which there will be a program featuring pofessional singers namely Gordon Lightfoot, Filipino versatile singer Lilac Caña, Janelle Bellgrade, Mickey Bustos, Snookey Tynes, Ote A’ Tane Hawaiian dancers, the Falun Gong dancers, among others.
The children will have their sections at Howard and Sherbourne Streets, called the West Park during the day.
