CNN Philippines, solon condemn killing of cameraman

CNN PH assistant cameraman“The continued failure of the government to arrest, prosecute and convict the perpetrators is indicative of how little, if any at all, importance that the Aquino administration is making to stop this murderous rampage and end the state of impunity in our country.”

MANILA – The CNN Philippines and press freedom advocates condemned the killing of assistant cameraman Jojo Oldan.

Oldan, 29, was shot dead by a lone gunman wearing brown jacket and denims on June 25 at 5:15 a.m. in barangay Pinagbuklod, Imus, Cavite, according to a CNN report. He sustained seven gunshot wounds, three on the head. http://cnnphilippines.com/videos/2015/06/26/CNN-Philippines-assistant-cameraman-shot-dead.html

In its official statement, the CNN Philippines said they will “spare no effort to bring the criminal/criminals to justice.”

Authorities have yet to establish whether the murder is work-related or not.

In a statement, Bayan Muna Representative Carlos Zarate said the killing of Oldan “is the result of the reigning impunity in our country.”

“The Aquino government is not doing its job of protecting media workers from these crimes. The continued failure of the government to arrest, prosecute and convict the perpetrators is indicative of how little, if any at all, importance that the Aquino administration is making to stop this murderous rampage and end the state of impunity in our country,” Zarate said.

If the killing is proven to be work-related, Oldan will be the third journalist to be killed this year and the 27th under the Aquino presidency, according to the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP).
