Rathika Sitsabaiesan opens re-election HQ
SCARBOROUGH NORTH–Rathika Sitsabaiesan opened her re-election campaign office on Saturday, August 22. Rathika was elected as the Member of Parliament in Scarborough-Rouge River in 2011, the first and only MP of Tamil heritage in Canadian history. She is running for re-election in Scarborough North for the New Democratic Party.
In her speech, Rathika thanked her supporters and spoke about the NDP’s plan on reducing small business tax, creating local jobs, improving our immigration system, repealing Bill C-51 and implementing $15 per day child care.
More than a hundred families, friends and supporters gathered for the special occasion. Among the supporters, entrepreneurs and community activists, Esa Para Esananda and Selvajothy Ravindran spoke passionately of the great work Rathika has been doing and their support for her. NDP candidates from nearby ridings, Dan Harris, Rev. KM Shantikumar, Gregory Hines and Laura Patrick were also in attendance.
August 22 also marks the 4 year anniversary of the late NDP leader, Jack Layton’s passing. Remembering Jack, who was a friend and mentor to her, Rathika spoke to the crowd, “Even he is no longer physically with us, I know he is always looking over. We are his living legacy. Let’s carry on and finish what he started.”
