MANILA, Philippines – Leave the Lumad in peace.
In one of his strongest statements as church leader, Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle on Wednesday, November 11, appealed to the military to leave the persecuted Lumad or indigenous communities in the southern Philippines.
He also urged paramilitary groups to lay down their arms to ensure peace in Lumad communities.
“Nananawagan kami, unang-una, sa ating mga pinuno sa pamahalaan. Pairalin sana nila ang kapayapaan,” Tagle said in a statement after he visited a Lumad community staging a protest in Liwasang Bonifacio, Manila.
