Lean Atendido, a 17-year old Filipino Canadian, will represent Canada at the Jr. World Championships in Burnaby, British Columbia in November, having recently won as national champion in taekwondo.
Atendido emerged first place in in the Jr. -51 kg bantamweight division during the Canadian National Taekwondo Championships last May 13, at the Olympic oval in Calgary, Alberta, besting seven other athletes from different provinces around the country.
Contacted by The Philippine Reporter about his big national win, and his honour to represent Canada in the Taekwondo World Championships, the Grade 11 student of St. Roch Catholic Secondary School in Brampton, Ontario, had this humble response:
“This tournament was important to all junior athletes as it was the team qualifiers for the Jr. World Championships, which happens every two years. Fortunately, this year’s Jr. World Championships will be set in Burnaby, BC, in November. With this tournament being one of the most prestigious stages that a taekwondo athlete will experience, there will be an estimate of over 100 countries participating at this event.”
Atendido also expressed excitement about his being ranked number one in Ontario for his weight division. “I have also been invited to participate in the 2016 Ontario Summer Games which will be taking place in Mississauga during mid-August. The Ontario Summer Games is a multi-sport event which includes taekwondo.”
Atendido is coached by Sungmin Son from Sons Taekwondo Academy, Woodbridge, Ontario.
Aside from martial arts, Atendido’s interests and hobbies include playing basketball, watching movies and playing the guitar and ukulele.
Atendido, who was born in the Philippines is the son of Eran and Lorna Atendido.
