B.C. Asian Heritage Month with Tracing Malong

B.C. Asian Heritage Month with Tracing Malong

Malong-posterArtistic Director,  choreographer, dancer Alvin Erasga Tolentino of Co. ERASGA is proud to partner with Migrante BC in  the dance production of Tracing Malong/Guhit ng Ating Malong in celebration of Asian Heritage Month this May.

Tracing Malong/Guhit ng Malong centres around the malong, the traditional tube-like and intricately printed fabric associated with Mindanao in the southern part of the Philippines. The malong is one of the quintessential icons of Mindanao – the fabric of a hundred uses, from a blanket, a prayer mat, a baby-carrier, a skirt, a head cover, a baby hammock, a fruit basket, a sleeping bag, and so many things.

The malong comes to life in this contemporary, progressive and provocative production choreographed by Alvin Tolentino and told in dance by seven contemporary dancers from the Philippines and Vancouver.

Alvin Tolentino explains, “The malong which I have been drawn to with my ongoing interest in Asian ancestry through culture and arts is ancient Asian traditional arts; its legacy is alive in culture and the people. This dance and production represent to me continuity and progress where tradition is active, dynamic and not static.”

Tracing Malong/Guhit ng Malong is a fundraiser to help support the programs of Migrante BC in organizing, educating and empowering Filipino migrants and immigrants.

There are sponsorship opportunities for the fundraiser dance production. Regular tickets are Early bird tickets at $25 each and $30 each at the door.
