Malaya Canada gets ethnic press support for Stop the Killings campaign
MALAYA Canada, through its spokesperson Marissa Corpus, presented before the National Ethnic Press and Media Council of Canada (NEPMCC), Oct. 19, the human rights situation in the Philippines, and asked the organization to support its campaign to stop the killings and other human rights violations.
Specifically, Corpus informed the ethnic media organizations of examples of recent killings of human rights defenders, among others, and asked the ethnic media organization to support its “Open Letter to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to Stop the Killings and Human Rights Violations in the Philippines. (See Open Letter)
Malaya’s open letter explains why the Canadian government should diplomatically intervene in the situation, citing that the Philippine government institutions that are linked to these violations “are the same institutions which enjoy Canada’s support for its military’s budget for years.”
In response, NEPMCC President and CEO Thomas Saras said that the organization, which has historically supported campaigns for human rights in various countries, will organize and plan an appropriate support to the campaign. NEPMCC Officer Joe Volpe of Corriere Canadese, expressed his appreciation for the presentation, and suggested support for the human rights campaign on the Philippine situation, as well as those of other countries.
Meanwhile, Malaya Canada is actively approaching other organizations and individuals to support the open letter to the Prime Minister, which is available at:
