New association for Scarboro seniors formed

New association for Scarboro seniors formed

Welcome this new group for seniors in Scarborough dedicated to offering activities to 55 plus! Delayed by few months due to the recent Federal election, the grant of $25,000 became the bellwether of things to come. And come they did.

Last Saturday, March 7, was the acquaintance party of Scarborough Ontario Seniors Association (SOSA) attended by about 70 people, 42 of whom were pre-signed members.  Its mission statement: Extending the Length of Life with Quality Living.

There were two PowerPoint presentations: first by Terry Bautista to introduce SOSA, its inception and building process and to discuss the budgeting and the allocation of the grant; the next was by Carol Banez to discuss the Seniors Needs Assessment Survey with pie and bar charts summarizing the responses received.

A short election was held, some positions are appointed positions:

Directors: Carol Banez, Terry Bautista and May Amparado
President: Carol Banez
Vice-President: Terry Bautista
Treasurer: May Amparado
Secretary: Minda Longkines
Asst. Secretary: Alma Benemeritos
P.R.O.: Percy Flores and Peter Palomera
Auditor: Julito Longkines (Appointed)

Not a minute after the lunchbreak, line-dancing began, with Edd Banez as able instructor. The members went through Slash, New York/Electric Slide and the new craze Bachata line dance.  Mr. Nilo Marfori, a former member of “Dancing with Chito” (Feliciano) of Philippine TV Channel 7 taught a few steps of basic cha-cha .

That is SOSA in a nutshell. So come and join us till May 30, 2009 at: Birkdale Community Center, 1299 Ellesmere Road (S on Ellesmere, W of Brimley), on Saturdays, 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., March 17 to May 30, 2009.
