Reina Elena pageant raises $10,000 for poor in R.P

TORONTO–“It’s very overwhelming to think that I could help some of these sick children in the Philippines by doing what I feel is so little, but has resulted in so much. Being part of the Reina Elena has taught me that you’re capable of doing more than you think are.”

These were the words of Armina Abellanora Ascano after she was crowned Reina Elena for 2004.
The Annual Reina Elena Dinner Dance raised $10,000 for poor people in the Philippines. It was held at the Macedonian Banquet Hall in Toronto.

In 1990, the L.I.F.E. Philippines Foundation Canada was founded by Dr. Nora M. Stephenson. This is organization is dedicated to aiding poor people in need of medical and social assistance. One of the major sources of its funding is the annual Reina Elena pageant held within the month of May.
This year there were a total of six participants – Armida Ascano, Christina Collantes, Margaret Sia, Prescilla Jong, Victoria Cosico and Meagan Ting.

Each were selected to partake in the event, devoting herself to the challenges and responsibilities of charity and volunteer work. Through seeking sponsors, advertisers for the souvenier package, and selling raffles tickets for the benefit of the fundraising, these “Angels of Mercy” worked hard to raise funds as much as they could. Their hard work paid off with the gaining of experience, awareness and certification issued for volunteer work, as well as, the individual recognition for their accomplishments.

Miss Arcano and the other Angels of Mercy were awarded beautiful trophies and a variety of extraordinary prizes. Unlike other pageants, the Reina Elena focuses and recognizes the passion and successful achievement in dedication to the cause, more that external beauty.
Miss Ascano would like to thank her family and friends for their continuous encouragement and unwavering support through the whole experience.
