Chatham-Kent Filipino Canadians elect officers

The Chatham-Kent Filipino-Canadian Club was started in 1977 by Clarita Levitt and Esther Schierenburg in Chatham, Ontario. Chatham is a town of 43,000 people and is located between Windsor and London on Highway 401.

On Sunday, August 1, 2004, the Filipino-Canadian Club of Chatham-Kent held its Annual Election of Officers at the Erieau Beach Pavilion. Members came from Ridgetown, Thamesville, Dresden, Wheatley, Chatham, Tilbury, Wallaceburg, Highgate, Muirkirk, Toronto, the United States and The Republic of the Philippines. The new slate of officers are: President- Josie Holden, Vice President- Cynthia McDonald, Treasurer- Remy Wallace and Secretary- Annabelle Ancheta.

A pot-luck dinner featuring traditional Canadian and Philippine dishes was served to the fifty-five members. Children enjoyed themselves swimming, makingsand castles and playing organized games, while some adults played an ancient traditional Philippine game called Sungka. Top prize-winning children were Jeremy Wallace, Rachael Wallace, Andrew Wallace, Nicole Dilliot, Megan Dilliot, Katherine McDonald and Billy Brien. In her acceptance speech, President Holden promised to dedicate herself to uniting the Philippine community in itsgoal to preserve traditional customs and to help new Canadians fully integrate into Canadian society. President Holden invited anyone interested in Philippine customs and language to join the associate. Upcoming events will be an Installation of Officers Ceremony, a Christmas Party and several group birthday parties.
