What is Silayan today?
Silayan Community Center is located at the sub level basement of 240 Wellesley St. East, in the heart of downtown Toronto, servicing Filipinos specially in St. James Town area where Filipinos are the largest ethnic population. Programs offered by Silayan are the following:
• Piano lessons
• Hawaiin dancing
• Computer classes for beginners
• Newcomers program
• Series of educational workshops on Human rights, labour laws, family laws; financial management, police, environment; job search, public speaking, tennants rights, childrens and seniors rights; as well as immigration and settlement programs.
Silayan is actively collaborating with various non profit agencies in the community such as the St. James Town Working group, Our Lady of Lourdes Parish Social Ministry, Federation of Metro Tenants Association, San Lorenzo Ruiz Church, Chinese Canadian National Council, and ACAS. Silayan also absorbed a basketball team at St. James Town as well as have programs on single parents, and youth during summer.
