1st Fil-Can Poker League on June 25

TORONTO–All roads lead to the Golden Valley Foods Banquet Hall along Principal Rd. in Scarborough on June 25, 2005 as the 1st Filipino-Canadian Poker League blasts off at 3 p.m. and the selected 200 invited players display their wits and strategies for the top purse of $5,000 and the exquisite trophy that go with the honor of being the champion of the inaugural sporting card game.

Organized by the Ang Bisaya Association of Ontario (ABAO), in cooperation with The Philippine Courier and the National Poker League, the one-day sporting event is being held for the purpose of raising funds of which part of the proceeds will go to the Justice for Jeffrey Reodica Memorial Trust Fund and to the summer programs of ABAO.

Tournament Director and National Poker League founding-president Sean Tigley said entry fee is $100 and this entitles the player a chance to become the league inaugural champion with $5,000 on his pocket, free dinner, snacks, coffee/tea and an entertainment program featuring some of Toronto’s brightest Pinoy singers. Seventh to second placers will also receive cash prizes and small mementos from the organizing committee.

The organizing committee is composed of Dolping Tigley, chairman and members Leto Tigley, Bert Tigley, Erena Garcia, Mon Datol among others. Early major sponsors include Forex Toronto CEO Ted H. Dayno, Golden Valley Foods president Henry Sia, U-MAC Express Cargo and Filipino Canadian Realtors Association. Toronto Ward 8 Councilor Peter Li Preti is expected to donate the trophy.

“It is a sporting event where the participants’ strategies play a lot in winning or losing. We would start at promptly 3 p.m. and no participant will be accepted if he comes late and after the first lay is done,” Sean Tigley said.

“It is the 5-card Texas poker game that we would use and each player is given chips equivalent to $1,000. There would be eight (8) players in every table and winners would advance to next round with the losers going to the sidelines,” Tigley explained, adding any complaint regarding the rules of the game, the tournament director’s decision will be final.

Big screens where the names of the players will be posted on different walls of the venues and the time clocks will also be displayed together with the movements of players and their seedings and rankings..
Philippine Consul General Alejandro Mosquera and Willie Reodica are two of the major guests invited. Awarding of prizes will be held right after the final round of the competition.
