Silayan promotes ‘Barong at Saya’
Silayan Community Centre will promote “Barong at Saya,” the authentic Filipino formal attire, in a dinner – dance slated on November 5 (Saturday), 7:00 p.m., at the Best Western Primrose Hotel at 111 Carlton St., corner Jarvis at downtown Toronto.
The event is a breakthrough for a fund raising for the benefit of the of the Filipino-Canadians’ Lesbian,Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) group.
The project is geared towards helping the LGBT in Toronto who have been dropping at the Silayan Community Center at 240 Wellesly St. East, Sub-Basement, from time to time and requesting for assistance.
Whatever funding generated in this undertaking will be given to the Filipino-Canadians LGBT.
The “Barong at Saya” project will focus on the Filipino heritage focusing on the fashion wear as the participating Filipino-Canadians will wear them with the objective of promoting the attire which will showcase the real native outfits.
Meanwhile, Silayan’s LGBT committee members who are endowed with creative and artistic passion will continue to conduct free sessions and lessons on make-ups to improve the looks of the aging Filipino-Canadians populace.
Silayan Community Centre has recently completed programs and porjects for the Filipino-Canadian Seniors in coordination with THE PILLARS Seniors headed by its’ president Frank Maralag, organization of Toronto by participating in the recent celebration of the 35th foundation anniversary of the Sunshine Centres for Seniors at the Ward’s Island. Lawyer Frank Luna was on hand to explain about the importance of “wills and power of attorney” together with accountant Ricardo Salvador
The centre has also orgnized another group of seniors headed Silayan’s member of the board of directors’ Aurora Medrano who toured the Sunshine Centres for Seniors at the Ward’s Island and they enjoyed dancing in the place.
