Brampton Federation Leyte fundraising
Brampton, ON, Canada – The Federation of Filipino Canadians of Brampton (the Federation) has started fund-raising activities for the victims and survivors of the Leyte Landslide. During its casino bus trip to Niagara on February 19th, the officers agreed that the funds raised from that trip, originally marked for Philippine Independence Day celebrations will be redirected towards the Leyte disaster fund. The Brampton Filipino Seniors Club and the Filipino Canadian Autoworkers Association of Brampton have pledged donations to the same cause.
Following are updates on ongoing fund-raising activities:
(1) Toonie for Leyte, an online appeal sent via email for anyone to deposit a Toonie into account number 21202-5206901 at any TD Canada Trust branch
This direct deposit appeal was officially launched February 24th, and already generous donations have been received from concerned donors.
(2) Coins for Leyte, where donation boxes (which are actually emptied and re-labeled cans of apple juice) are located at various retail stores and offices in Brampton and Mississauga
The City of Brampton is actively supportive and involved in distributing donation cans to various Community and Recreation Centres and at the City Hall. A total of 40 donation cans were distributed throughout Brampton and Mississauga areas.
(3) Karaoke/Monte Carlo Night which happened last Saturday, February 25, 2006 from 7pm at 32 Pride Court in Brampton, where $20.00 entitled a person for a dinner of chicken wings, French fries, and apple juice, plus a chance to sing your favourite songs.
Despite the cold snap and blowing snow last Saturday, the Karaoke/Monte Carlo Night was a success. There was not much singing and playing cards, but Pempe Saavedra of the Leytenos Association came to join us and explained further the proposed long term rehabilitation and reconstruction project that the LAO is planning. Divinia Zavala of the Filipino-Canadian Autoworkers Association of Brampton came to join us together with hubby Mario Zavala, president of the First Filipino-Canadian Association of Vaughn.
(4) Charity Basketball Game between the Peel Regional Police Team and a Filipino Elite Team, currently being put together, and final details to follow.
Danny Bitanga, President of the Federation of Filipino Canadians of Brampton addressed the Brampton City Council during its session last Monday, February 27th to give them an update on the situation in Leyte and on the ongoing fundraising activities.
These activities should end by March 31st. At that time, all funds raised will be pooled, accounted, and receipted, before being released to Leyte. For more information, please visit www.landsliderelief.com , a website graciously created by Mr. Emerson Lim.
