U of T on Filipino-focused research
TORONTO–A workshop focused on the Filipino community will be held March 31, 2006 at the University of Toronto, Women and Gender Studies Institute, New College, on March 31, 2006.
The whole day event features a presentation and discussion of current research on the Filipino community in Canada, and some aspects of Philippine life and culture.
Among the research studies is the paper, “From Community Crisis to Capacity Building,” by Mila Astorga-Garcia, Board Member and Research Coordinator of the Community Alliance for Social Justice (CASJ); Managing Editor of the Philippine Reporter; and Research Analyst of Social Development, Finance and Administration, City of Toronto. The paper was first presented at the international conference held in Toronto, June 9-10, 2005, titled, “Community Crisis Response, Looking Through A Cultural Lens.”
The event is coordinated by Bonnie McElhinny, Associate Professor of Anthropology and Women and Gender Studies Institute, and Instructor of NEW 434, a new course on Gender, the Philippines and the Filipino Diaspora being offered at the university.
Other participants are Lillian Petroff, Coordinator of Education & Community Outreach, Multicultural Society of Ontario;Anita Fortuno and Bernice Small, Settlement counselors for INTERCEDE for the Rights of Domestic Workers, Caregivers and Newcomers; Pamela Sayne and students from the UTSC on their work on the Smokey Mountain Project; Magdaragat Philippines Inc. and the Filipino Students’ Association of Toronto (FSAT).
The event is sponsored by the Community/University Knowledge Alliance Program of the Women and Gender Studies Institute, and by the Department of Anthropology, University of Toronto.
