An exciting musical experience will be happening on April 23, Sunday at 3 p.m. at St. Michael’s College Auditorium, University of Toronto campus on 81 St. Mary St., Toronto.
Raul Sunico, the internationally acclaimed Filipino piano virtuoso who ranks among the finest of the Philippine’s masters of the ivory keys, will be on stage at Brennan Hall, St. Michael’s College for an afternoon Piano Concert.
Mr. Sunico, described as an “incomparable and brilliant musical genius who can essay from romantic to contemporary music effortlessly”, is an accomplished concert pianist, prolific composer, arranger and orchestral soloist. He received three undergraduate degrees from the University of the Philippines and the Master’s Degree in Music from The Juilliard School of Music. A highly regarded international performer, Raul Sunico has given solo recitals worldwide and performed with prestigious symphony orchestras as featured soloist. He is the recipient of the Silver Medal from the Viotti International Piano Competition in Vercelli, Italy; a Finalist Diploma in International Piano Competition in Bolzano, Italy; and the Henry Cowell Prize winner in the University of Maryland International Piano Competitions. Prof. Sunico, the Dean of Music at the University of Santo Tomas Conservatory of Music, has recorded more than 24 albums, nine of which are Filipino Folk Songs and Kundimans arranged for classical pianos. These include the Pilipinas Kong Mahal, Lambingan, Sa Bawa’t Sandali, Ang Tangi Kong Pag-ibig and the songs of the revolution.
The Piano Concert is a project of the Association of Cavitenos in Canada with the cooperation of Fr. Erno Diaz, Coordinator of the Filipino Apostolate in the Archdiocese of New York. According to CAVITEÑOS’ president, Bernadette Zaragoza, the purpose of the project is two-fold: 1) to inspire our youth of Filipino descent to be achievers in the field of music and; 2) to raise funds for a couple of worthy objectives: the restoration program for Guinsaugon, Leyte, site of the recent Philippine Landslide Disaster; and for the San Lorenzo Ruiz Church, the newly designated Church for the Filipinos situated in New York City – the first one in North America and the second in the world after the Filipino Church in Rome.
The Piano Concert promises to be an experience of pure sensory delight through an array of fine musical compositions from the vast repertoire of Raul Sunico, artiste par excellence.
Information and tickets are available from the Concert Committee Chairs: Chubby & Vicky Fojas (905-508-7081), Elito Lim (905-507-1809) and Cecile Mojica (416)880-1850.
