Manila High marks 100 years
Manila High School (MHS) is celebrating its centennial anniversary on June 11 to 18, 2006. One of the oldest public high schools in the Philippines, Manila High School, located in Intramuros, is the alma mater of three former Philippine presidents, Jose P. Laurel, Manuel A. Roxas and Elpidio Quirino. It has also produced outstanding and illustrious leaders such as lawyer/educator, Conrado F. Benitez; the first United Nations General Assembly President, Carlos P. Romulo; and 1977 Ramon Magsaysay Awardee for Public Service, Dr. Fe del Mundo.
The centennial celebration starts with a “Walk on the Wall” (“Alay Lakad”) to commemorate the historical events that occurred inside the 2.5-kilometre “walled city” of Intramuros, from its early beginnings as a wooden fort built by Rajah Sulayman; to Jose Rizal’s Ultimo Adios; and the Japanese prison during WWII.
